CHRISTMAS DECORATING THREE WAYS

By Emma Smith

Original article by The Home

Christmas; it’s the most wonderful time of year, not least because it’s your one opportunity to run rampant decorating your home… and eating all the food, naturally. But just because red, green and gold has always been the waving banner of the festive season, that doesn’t mean you can’t forge your own decorating trail and still call it merry. And this is exactly what our styling team has been up to.

If you’re ready to graduate from dated baubles, half-blown seed lights and tinsel shedding everywhere, then be sure to have a look-see at our favourite Christmas décor ideas. They may be somewhat safer than the Swedes’ giant straw goat effigy, and not quite as spooky as the Ukrainians’ custom of decorating their trees with cobweb, but they’re still certain to get attention from your holiday guests – for all the right reasons.

FRENCH PROVINCIAL CHRISTMAS
In this elegant take on tradition, keeping your palette subdued is key. Avoid strong Christmas colours by wrapping boxes in simple brown paper or squares of linen cloth, and decorate your tree in a monochrome or soft grey look. A decorative rug is an essential touch for when you’re huddled on the floor passing gifts.

VINTAGE CHRISTMAS
Take a stroll down memory lane with decorations that emphasise antique silhouettes, time-worn textures and handspun charm. With its inherent sense of nostalgia, we can’t think of a better look for bringing friends and family together. Vintage Christmas is especially suited to a more traditional colour scheme of forest green, red and gold, but feel free to experiment with steely greys and creamy whites for an updated look.

SEASIDE CHRISTMAS
Snow vs sand. Yule log vs driftwood. Pine tree vs palm tree. As far as we’re concerned, the seaside is the southern hemisphere’s answer to a traditional white Christmas. Get the look with sun-bleached timber and weathered whites, and opt for a contemporary tree like a timber cut-out or driftwood style to give your space a fresh and natural feel.
